Solutions to overcome dangers involving heat shrink cable termination
- Centralized cable entry points via a cable gland plate are desirable. The crossing cores when combined with increasing stress over insulation, phase out cable sections present in the box. If possible, use 11kV single trifurcating joint cores outside the cable box.
- Besides this, use a two-hole, high-voltage compression lug. It should perfectly match the two-hole terminal pad and ensure excellent low-resistance metal-to-metal surface area.
- The HV cable box perfectly fits single-core terminations. Using three-core cables to maintain clearances between cores is impossible and results in black discharge marks. These days, three-core XLPE cables are rarely used. Single-core triplex enables easy installation and termination and is affordable.
- Cut the bottom part of the heat shrinkable cable termination and use a mastic-installed semi-con screen. Cables should cross where the semi-con is intact in its place. Hence, select HV cable terminations designed top-down and not from the cable strip.
- Strip off existing Heat Shrinkable Cable Termination. Use Semicon tubes to extend the core screen to place stress between the phase barriers. However, it is not recommended as you might not know what discharge-related damage has occurred.

- Connect single cores with a cable joint and eliminate heat shrink sheds. Phase barriers may make it appear similar to a 33kV termination. Semi-conductive screen ends are easily visible due to the small bulge. Stress control tubes fit below this point and not above it.
- Reaching a distance the cable jointer might have low-fitting heat shrink terminations. The termination box might not appear big for such voltage class termination. Single-core cable is a better choice. They can achieve cable spacings. However, it results in lots of discharges.
- Take a single core and use a Trif joint just below the box. If you have little space, use a compact cold or heat shrink termination. Pinpointing life expectancy can be difficult. However, a lot of discharge could mean scheduling within a week to avoid more damage. During discharge, the temperature might reach 1,000 degrees Celsius. It will fail as soon as the cores increase carbon deposits.
- The three-core cable can be broken into single cores using jacket reintroduction kits. It should be done outside the 11kV cable box. Then, the single cores are individually glanded to ensure correct installation.
